THE KING OF ALLIGATOR MEAT

CELEBRATING 666 DAYS OF TRAVELING

How better to celebrate 666 days of travelling than with piranha soup and grilled alligator! At O Rei da Carne de Jacaré (‘The King of Alligator Meat’) they specialise in alligator and have a great variety of preparations. For us the grilled caiman (jacaré) with mushrooms, shrimps, capers and sun dried tomatoes (Jacaré dos Sonhos) was the best alligator dish we have ever had; very tender and tasty. Parabéns!

EMU, TURTLE & MORE

They do not only serve alligator and Piranha soup, which is a Brazilian specialty typical of the Pantanal, but many other exotic meats such as ostrich, emu (similar to ostrich, a smaller but very big bird commonly seen in Brazil in the wild), turtle and frog legs. We love trying new and exotic things and here was the first time for us to taste emu and turtle.

LOCAL FISH & MANY OTHER CHOICES

If this is all a bit too extreme for you, don’t worry, they have a great list of local fish too featuring Pirarucu, Pintado, Piraputanga and Pacu; some of which you can see while snorkelling in Bonito (though they’re not fished from the protected rivers here). O Rei da Carne de Jacaré also has other dishes on the menu like pasta or chicken, yet no desserts.

There’s a pleasant environment with nice outdoor seating (and great toucan-print table cloths) and great photos, ostrich eggs and alligator skins at display. A lot to taste and experience, just a block away from the town’s main square, where you could get the city’s best desserts and ice-cream at Allegra Gelato e Café.

(Prices: Jacaré dos sonhos (grilled caiman) BRL120 for two people; emu BRL82 for two; fish BRL88-98 for two)
