CLEAR WATER CAVE LAGOON, BUT CLOUDY & CLOSED HALF OF THE YEAR
Lagoa Misteriosa is Brazil’s deepest phreatic cave, in which you can snorkel or even dive in the clear water. However, due to algae the visibility is poor from around October till April (depending on the weather and temperature) and therefore the cave is closed. Unfortunately, it was closed during the months that we were there.
A TRUE MYSTERY
This ‘Mysterious Lagoon’, is a lake at the bottom of a sinkhole in limestone rock. It is more than 220 meters deep; this is the maximum depth reached by professional cave diver Gilberto Menezes de Oliveira, in 1998, which explains why it is called mysterious.
DIVES WITH OR WITHOUT CERTIFICATION
Even if you have never dived before, Lagoa Misteriosa offers a first diving experience called ‘baptism’, reaching 8 meters in depth. For certified divers, the depth depends on the kind of certification, and can be up to 60 meters.
COMBINE WITH RIO DA PRATA OR BURACO DAS ARARAS
As this lagoon is 50km from Bonito and near Rio da Prata, these two could be combined on the same day, or consider camping nearby (to enjoy both with the best light). Also, Buraco das Araras is only 11km away and could well be combined on the same day.
