OUR FIRST ROAD ADVENTURE
Our first trip in a half-refurbished UZ; departing at midnight and driving two hours through thick fog and over a mountain pass to go to the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest classic car event; Beach Hop. After a short sleep we could see the cars arriving from our breakfast table.
BLOWN AWAY BY MUSCLE CARS
Though we regret we did not paint our ‘1985 classic truck’ yet, for two days we were continuously blown away by thousands of stunning classic cars of all kinds at Beach Hop in Onemana Beach and Whangamata. What also caught our attention were all the unusual and (un-)appropriate license plates; ‘MI COOL’, ‘2 LO 4U’, ‘I BOSS 1’, ‘DREAM8’, ‘OIL PIG’, ‘SEXY47’, ‘SKYBUZ’, ‘MEAN56’, ‘NOHOOD’, ‘NIPPLE’, etc.
Of course we had to bring a visit to the classic camper and caravan section, where the interiors out-won ours. However, we might win with our plans for the exterior.
AT THE RIGHT PLACE, YOU’LL MEET THE RIGHT PEOPLE
The whole event has a great vibe with friendly and enthusiastic people. We even got invited by two guys driving their fixed up Mercury Cougar, to take part in the car parade and join their friends birthday dinner.
One of the guys, Chris McDell, also asked us to come to his place in Hamilton and accompany him and his four-wheel drive club for a weekend in Karakariki. Definitely we were in for that!
